Biological sciences is the study of life and living organisms, their life cycles, adaptations and environment. The mission of the organization is to recognize and support academic excellence in the biological sciences and encourage undergraduate research, primarily through undergraduate research awards and conferences. Using cutting-edge live-cell imaging approaches, the Hayer lab investigates how cells coordinate with each other during collective cell migration. Our faculty actively pursue extramural funding to support research programs that also train undergraduate students who act as collaborators in the development of that research.
Ecological systems are studied at several different levels, from the scale of the ecology of individual organisms, to those of populations , to the ecosystems and finally the biosphere The term population biology is often used interchangeably with population ecology , although population biology is more frequently used in the case of diseases , viruses , and microbes , while the term population ecology is more commonly applied to the study of plants and animals.
The fourth year consists of an extended project, which can be lab or field based, plus advanced research skills training. A popular branch of molecular biology involves the study of DNA, with the goal of sequencing or mutating it in order to study the effects and possibilities of these processes. On this module you’ll attend lectures, practical classes and workshops and take part in fieldwork study and guided independent study.
Our faculty members are world-class researchers and teachers who share an excitement for the life sciences. The course now incorporates an optional fourth year, meaning students can either leave after three years with a BA or choose to stay on and complete an extended project under the supervision of an academic member of staff (which can be lab or field-based), in addition to advanced research skills training.
Students concentrate their coursework and research within one of two tracks: Cell, Molecular, Health, and Disease (CMHD) Biology or Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal (EEO) Biology. The biological sciences are currently experiencing a revolution driven by technological developments in genomics, proteomic sequencing, isotopic analysis, logging of acoustic and movement data, 3D scanning, remote unmanned monitoring, and computational power to analyze vast data sets.
Physiology is the study of the mechanical, physical, and biochemical processes of living organisms function as a whole. Cell Theory: There are three parts to cell theory — the cell is the basic unit of life, all living things are composed of cells, and all cells arise from pre-existing cells. In addition to subject-specific skills, biology graduates develop valuable transferable skills such as data analysis, communication, teamwork and time management.
